Every odd-numbered year, the Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival brings performers and visitors from across Africa and its diaspora to Cape Coast and Elmina, closing with a candlelight vigil at the Door of No Return.

Panafest was founded in 1992, conceived by the playwright Efua Sutherland, as a biennial Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival for Africans and the diaspora, held in odd-numbered years.

The programme includes a Northern Pilgrimage retracing historical routes associated with the slave trade, along with theatre, music and poetry performances staged around Cape Coast and Elmina. It runs alongside Emancipation Day, a related commemoration of the 1834 abolition of slavery in British colonies, and closes with a candlelight vigil and reenactment at the Door of No Return in Cape Coast Castle.

It centres on the same UNESCO castles most heritage visitors already plan to see, but on these specific dates the sites carry a different, more charged public programme than an ordinary day visit.
