Hundreds of hand-painted canoes packed into the Benya Lagoon beneath the castle walls, at their busiest just after dawn.
The Benya Lagoon at Elmina is one of the great working harbours of West Africa. Canoes are painted with proverbs, flags and football crests, and each one carries a name that means something to its owner.
Boats come in from around six in the morning and the market on the quay runs until the catch is gone. Smokehouses behind the quay process what is not sold fresh.
The best vantage point is the bridge over the lagoon, or the walls of Fort St. Jago on the hill above.

Getting there
- Twenty minutes by shared taxi from Cape Coast.
- The harbour is a five-minute walk from the castle gate.

Visitor tips
- Ask before photographing individuals, particularly the fishmongers.
- The quay is wet and slippery, wear shoes you do not mind ruining.
