Aboakyer: Winneba’s bare-handed deer hunt for the god Otu

Each May, two rival Asafo companies in Winneba race unarmed into the bush to catch a live bushbuck for the Effutu god Otu, then parade it home to a beach town in full carnival mood.

Aboakyer traces back to the Effutu people’s migration to the Winneba coast, and is held to honour the deity Otu and secure the community’s protection and good fortune for the year ahead. What was once a hunting-based provisioning rite has become a communal contest between Winneba’s two historic Asafo companies, Tuafo and Dentsefo.

At dawn, unarmed teams from each company head into a nearby bush reserve to catch a live bushbuck by hand. Whichever company gets theirs back to the Paramount Chief’s palace first wins the year’s bragging rights, and the animal is presented to the chief before being ritually offered the following day. The rest of Winneba spends the day drumming, singing and parading through the streets.

It is a genuinely local occasion rather than a staged show — the hunt itself happens out of town in the reserve, so what most visitors actually see and take part in is the parade, the drumming and the durbar back in Winneba itself.

Getting there

Winneba is roughly ninety minutes west of Accra on the N1 coastal road.
Shared taxis and buses run from Accra’s Kaneshie and Kwame Nkrumah Circle terminals directly to Winneba.

Visitor tips

The hunt itself takes place in a reserve outside town and isn’t really open to casual spectators — plan around the parade and durbar in Winneba itself.
Streets get crowded and traffic tightens through town on festival day, so park early or arrive on foot.
